I asked 8 different people to fill out my survey in order to
be able to identify what interests my target audience have in short films.
I asked respondents whether they think that there should be
an increase in awareness for drug addiction in teenagers, to which 100% of
participants responded with ‘Yes’. This then highlighted that my target audience
believe that something about that particular issue should be created, such as a
short film.
In addition to this, I asked respondents if they would be
interested in watching my short film based on teenage drug addiction, to which 87%
responded with ‘Yes’ and 13% responded with ‘maybe’. This suggests to me that
my target audience are willing to watch a short film based on this issue as it
is a topic that is not discussed enough.
These results enable me to identify what exactly my target
audience are looking for when watching a short film and what particular issues
they would like to watch more about, providing me with an opportunity to be
able to reach out to my target audience which the particular issue I aim to
cover.
Considering that my target audience are mainly teenagers and parents, the likeliness of them watching 'Snow' will be high as the short film will preview around the evening time where the majority of my target audience will be home from work and school.
In addition to this, my short film is targeted towards all social classes as the family and main character in 'Snow' are middle class. This highlights the possibility of teenage drug addiction occurring in all social classes, regardless of their household income.
Considering that my target audience's household income will be an average salary per year, they will be able to afford the standard channels that I will distribute my short film on.
Focus groups enable me to gain face to face responses from my target audience, obtaining personal opinions towards what I will be researching for (my short film). I will show participants the two different short films shown below covering drug abuse, afterwards asking them what they did and did not like about the two. I will then be able to include the most admired techniques from the two within my short film.
“D.R.U.G.S” is a short film which is made by Fiction Pictures
is an example as to the type of short film you can make with a standard budget.
In comparison to my short film, I will not have the skilled actors,
professional editing facilities and high quality equipment that would be
willing to work around my time schedule and for free of charge. This therefore
means that I will have to settle with standard equipment and inexperienced
actors.
Considering that my talent has agreed to act in my short film
for free, I can also request to use the school’s filming equipment and editing
facilities which will greatly help my budget.
However, seeing that my talent is unknown, it will help
emphasise the fact that my short film’s theme is based on social realism due to
most social realism films having characters who are unknown actors. When hiring
a crew, professional media productions often look for large crews including
As I would only be
requiring a small skeleton crew which consist of 5 people or under the only
crew I will be looking for is a camera man, lighting operator, sound recordist,
hair/makeup artist and an editor. This means that I can ask fellow classmates
to do these roles, therefore I would not have costs for hiring crew.
“Seahorse” is a short film based on drug abuse which is
made by Double Key Pictures. This short film can be slightly similar to mine as
the beginning of the short film has exterior shots which I am capable of
getting for my short film as well as the shots of the man being on the sofa.
However, the short film looks as if its budget is slightly
higher than mine due to having the props and rooms to look as if he is situated
in a hospital, which is something that may be difficult for me to achieve. The
actors are unknown which is common in social realism films in order to
emphasise the genre, therefore the lack of experience in my unknown actors will
not be an issue.
Despite having a much lower budget than this short
film I will still have access to editing and filming equipment, however I must
be able to find actors who are willing to be unpaid in my short film.
